It was grandfather Haigh who carved out his first wooden model boat: "It was out of Huon pine and that wonderful smell has fascinated me ever since." Then his father, Ernie Muir, who died in 1987 aged 95, carved him his second model boat, again in Huon pine, with which he won a Sandy Bay regatta model yacht event. It set the scene for the rest of his life.
